If your property is over 25-30 years old and has its original wiring, an Electrical Installation Condition Report (EICR) is a sensible first step to assess what is present and whether a rewire is needed.

Not always, but rewiring can be the right decision if the existing wiring is degraded or the circuit arrangement cannot accommodate new loads. Solar panels require new AC circuits back to the consumer unit; an EV charger typically needs a dedicated circuit rated for the charger's output. If the existing cables or consumer unit are not in a suitable condition to accept these circuits safely, rewiring before installation saves cost and disruption later. A rewire is an opportunity to plan circuit topology, cable routes and consumer unit layout for the systems a property will carry over the coming years. This includes dedicated circuits for battery storage, EV chargers, home office equipment and smart home controls. Planning these routes during a rewire is substantially more efficient than adding them later into a finished property.

Yes. Old wiring may have insufficient conductor cross-section for the continuous loads that battery systems and EV chargers require. It may also lack appropriate earthing arrangements or protection devices for bidirectional systems.
