Comprehensive Home Rewiring

A full or partial electrical rewire is one of the most significant improvements you can make to a property's electrical infrastructure. Old or degraded wiring cannot support the demands of modern energy systems - including solar panels, battery storage and EV charging. We carry out rewiring projects designed not only for safety and compliance with BS 7671, but for the load capacity, circuit topology and protection arrangements that modern energy systems require. Electrical work should be designed and completed by competent professionals in line with relevant UK wiring regulations.

Our Rewiring Process

Minimal Disruption & Clean Work

We understand a rewire can be daunting. Our electricians use advanced tools and techniques, such as floorboard tunnels and dust extraction systems, to minimise chasing and mess. We protect your furnishings and meticulously clean up at the end of each day, respecting your home as if it were our own.

Smart & Optimised Layouts

A rewire is the perfect opportunity to modernise your home's layout. We work with you to plan the optimal placement for sockets, switches, and lighting. We'll suggest adding convenient USB-C sockets, two-way switching for hallways, and feature lighting to enhance your living space and eliminate extension cords.

Premium, Compliant Materials

Your safety is non-negotiable. We only use high-quality, British Standard (BS 7671) compliant materials from trusted manufacturers. This includes modern PVC-insulated cabling, metal-clad consumer units, and reliable components that ensure the longevity and safety of your new electrical system for decades to come.

"The consultation process was brilliant. They didn't just replace old for old; they helped us plan a modern layout with USB-C sockets and better lighting positions. It's completely transformed how we use our living space. Highly recommend their smart approach."

Aisha Khan

Willesden Green, Northwest London

★★★★★

"After a worrying EICR report, we needed a full rewire. Electrical Works handled everything flawlessly. They explained the process, stuck to the quote, and provided all the certification promptly. A truly professional and trustworthy service."

Tom Sterling

Putney, Southwest London

★★★★★

"Our old wiring couldn't cope with modern appliances and kept tripping. The full rewire has solved all our issues. The team was efficient, friendly, and the quality of the finish is excellent. Our electrical system is now robust and future-proof."

Essential Electrical Rewiring Advice

Obsolete round-pin sockets and rubber cabling - pre-rewire condition unsafe for modern loads

Know the Warning Signs

Flickering lights, frequently tripping fuses, buzzing sounds from outlets, or old rubber/fabric-coated cables are clear signs you need an inspection for a potential rewire.

Brushed steel sockets with USB

Plan for the Future

During a rewire, add more sockets than you think you need, especially in the kitchen and home office. Consider adding Ethernet ports and USB-C outlets for future convenience.

RCBO consumer unit with surge protection and labelled circuits after a rewire

Don't Forget the Consumer Unit

A full rewire should always include a new 18th Edition consumer unit with RCBO protection on all circuits. This is the most critical safety component of the entire system.

Electrical Installation Certificate folder for a completed rewire

Always Ask for Certification

Ensure your electrician will provide a formal Electrical Installation Certificate (EIC) at the end of the job. This is your documented proof that the work is safe and compliant.

Living In During a Rewire

It is possible to live in the property during a rewire. A good electrician will work room by room and ensure you have power restored to essential areas each evening.

Electrician comparing VIR cable to twin and earth - partial versus full rewire decision

Partial vs. Full Rewire

If a survey shows one part of your wiring is unsafe (e.g., an old extension), it's likely the rest is of a similar age. A full rewire is often the most cost-effective solution long-term.

Technical Questions on Electrical Rewiring

How do I know if my house needs rewiring?

Common signs include frequently tripping circuit breakers, flickering lights, discoloured sockets or switches, or the presence of old rubber or fabric-insulated cables. If your property is over 25-30 years old and has its original wiring, an Electrical Installation Condition Report (EICR) is a sensible first step to assess what is present and whether a rewire is needed.

Should I rewire before installing solar panels or EV charging?

Not always, but rewiring can be the right decision if the existing wiring is degraded or the circuit arrangement cannot accommodate new loads. Solar panels require new AC circuits back to the consumer unit; an EV charger typically needs a dedicated circuit rated for the charger's output. If the existing cables or consumer unit are not in a suitable condition to accept these circuits safely, rewiring before installation saves cost and disruption later. See our fuse board replacement page for information on consumer unit readiness.

How does rewiring support smart home and energy systems?

A rewire is an opportunity to plan circuit topology, cable routes and consumer unit layout for the systems a property will carry over the coming years. This includes dedicated circuits for battery storage, EV chargers, home office equipment and smart home controls. Planning these routes during a rewire is substantially more efficient than adding them later into a finished property.

Can old wiring limit battery storage or EV charger installation?

Yes. Old wiring may have insufficient conductor cross-section for the continuous loads that battery systems and EV chargers require. It may also lack appropriate earthing arrangements or protection devices for bidirectional systems. An assessment of the existing wiring is part of any specification we produce before recommending or installing a battery storage or EV charging system. See our electrical installations page for more on infrastructure assessment.

Will there be a lot of disruption during a rewire?

Some disruption is unavoidable in a full rewire. We use dust sheets and floor protection throughout, minimise unnecessary wall chasing where existing routes can be used, and work to a programme that keeps essential circuits live where possible. We discuss the work scope and phasing clearly before any project starts.
