Vehicle-to-Home (V2H)

V2H uses the vehicle's battery to supply power back to the home when the vehicle is not in use. Where the vehicle, charger hardware and home energy system are all compatible, it can allow a household to draw from the vehicle during peak grid hours, or as backup supply during an outage. The practical benefit depends on the vehicle's available battery capacity, how frequently the vehicle is at home, the home's energy demand, tariff structure, and whether V2H hardware is compatible with the specific vehicle platform. Vehicle-to-Grid (V2G)

V2G goes a step further than V2H by allowing a vehicle to export stored energy directly to the public grid, not just to the home. In principle, this allows vehicle battery capacity to participate in grid balancing - exporting during high-demand periods and charging during low-demand periods. In the UK, residential V2G is in early commercial availability via a small number of compatible charger and vehicle combinations. The regulatory pathway typically requires a G99 DNO application and export limiting coordination, in addition to compatible vehicle and charger hardware. Commercial and technical availability varies and is continuing to evolve.
